Helping pregnant Women get the right nutrition
Industry: Genomics, Technology
Project Type: Native app design
Business: Awakens Inc.
Awakens Inc. is a genomic start-up from Tokyo, creating the movement and the community of genomic service developers all over the world. Awakens conducted a 48 hours Hackathon challenge at San Francisco's Digital Garage on December 9 - 10, 2017.
My team, Team Mama, was one of the top 3 finalists out of 9 teams for the Hackathon. Side note: I was able to take an hour and help design a quick mockup for the actual winners of the Hackathon: TurtleLife.
How do we help pregnant mothers combat their natural deficiencies?
Platform
Native app.
Timeline
48 hours
Role
One of three UI/UX designers, focused on the user flow of the Log Food screen.
RESEARCH
How are the users feeling?
“I just couldn’t keep any food down. I felt so bad, the baby just isn’t getting what she needs.”
We conducted user interviews, competitive analysis, and affinity mapping to find common themes among users.
We discovered that pregnant women struggle to even keep a healthy caloric intake during the months of morning sickness; they would eat anything that would not cause them to throw up (and that "anything" may not be the healthiest meals).
Many of the mothers we interviewed remarked that they were not sure if they were even consuming the nutrients that they needed and had a common worry that they would become diabetic during the pregnancy from unhealthy foods.
IDEATION
We want to encourage mothers to focus on foods that will combat their deficiencies while eat healthily for the baby's growth
The primary goal of our user was to keep the baby and themselves healthy throughout the pregnancy while the stakeholder's goal was to incorporate the Genome Link API into an app.
So we started designing a clear pathway for users to see the deficiencies the API presents based upon genetic data. With these deficiencies, we designed an easy platform for mothers to find specific foods that battle these deficiencies. These features will help mothers remain healthy during pregnancies (avoiding diabetes during pregnancy) while also providing quality meals for their babies.
Major Iterations
1. Informing mothers the caloric percentage as well as the goal caloric intake.
2. Making the Iron, Folic Acid, and Omega-3 look like clear buttons to click on.
3. Adding Daily Food Log for motivation and Recipes to optimize for a healthy diet that takes into account the deficiencies
4. Making Back look like a clear button to click on.
Have to push the MVP
Version 1 of our Mama App design mockup, ready to undergo usability testing. Among the designers on our team, I designed these pages.
I designed radial graphs similar to Fitbit's radial graphs to show the user the percentages of Iron, Folic Acid, and Omega-3 in her daily diet based upon the food that she had manually logged into the app. Upon clicking on "Iron" the user can view information about that element and the foods that contain the most iron (same for Folic Acid and Omega-3). These pages are user interactive, after the user has connected her genome with the Genome Link API.
Note that these designs have not gone through usability testing since the hackathon was only a 48 hour event.
Results + reflections
We only had 48 hours to complete this app, so we are lacking heavily in usability testing to see what our users would prefer to see or if there are any pain points with our design.
Working with my team was phenomenal, and we were able to respect each other's craft, coming in as the runner up to the winner!
